Giant Sequoia Sequoiadendron giganteum Among the oldest of the species in the US, with evergreen fernlike foliage and a thick trunk.  Native to California.  The oldest known sepcimen is 3260+ years and trees are commonly found that are more than 3000 years old. (These ages were obtained from stump counts.) #A866B Sequoia sempervirens

Coastal Redwood Sequoia sempervirens Conical shaped tree with dark green needle-like foliage arranged in flat sprays.   Native to foggy coastal areas of southwest Oregon and northwest California.  The leaves have been used as a poultice for earaches, and the sap as a stimulant.  Sprouts are used to create baskets and the wood is valuable for lumber.  The tree prefers a rich moist well-drained soil in cool humid, sheltered areas, but are rather tolerant and can succeed in moderately chalky or poorly drained soils.
