|
Guamachil, Guaymochil, Manila tamarind.
Monkeypod Belonging to the Pea family, Leguminosae, native to Mexico, South America, the Phillapines and the deep southern US. Pithecellobiums are often planted as hedges or fences as most trees have menacing thorns at the base of each leaf cluster. Trees reach 40-50ft in height at maturity and have wide spreading crowns. They also produce edible fruits which are consumed raw or are used to make a cooling drink. The fruits and seeds are also valued as food for livestock. Seeds contain 30% protein and is often used as a meal for animals or pressed for the oil they contain, which is used to manufacture soap. Bark is used for tanning. The trees grow quickly, are tough and withstand heavy browsing by animals and can grow many places that other trees will not, withstanding salt spray, drought and poor soils with ease. They are nearly unkillable and can withstand heavy pruning without injury. Propagation is done by softwood cuttings or by sowing seed. Seeds may be direct sown and no pre treatment is necessary. Hardy to 30F (1.1C) Height: 50ft Spread: 50ft. #A2184 Seed packet, Approximately 25 seeds $32.50 |
