Spicebush Native US deciduous shrub with tiny fragrant yellow blooms in the spring followed by clusters of bright red 1/2 inch fruits. Does best in moist well drained loamy soils under the shadows of other trees. Early colonists of the US used the dried berries as a substitute for allspice. The bark, leaves and berries are said to have tonic and stimulant properties and have been used to treat typhoid fever, bruises, rheumatism and stomach complaints.
