Kalopanax pictus

Castor Aralia or Tree Aralia - Kalopanax pictus (aka K. septemlobus, Acanthopanax ricinifolius, Acer pictum or Acer septemlobus)

Hardy native deciduous Japanese tree belonging to the aralia family,, Araliaceae.  Under favorable conditions, the tree can reach 80ft in height and is prized for its large palmate 5 or 7 lobed leaves, which are very similar to Liquidambar styraciflua (Sweet Gum) .  Trees with very deeply lobed leaves were classified as K. pictus Maximowiczii, but the classification is no longer widely used as it is difficult to distinguish between other types.  The tree has a tropical appearance when young.  Stems are spiny and branches are coarse and heavy.   Flowers bloom in summer and are yellow forming in clusters up to 12inches across, but not especially notably, and are followed by small black fruits.

Medicinally, the bark is used to treat stomach and liver problems and to treat fungal infections.  It is also used as an insecticide.

Trees can be propagated by sowing seed and taking softwood cuttings in summer.  Seed should be soaked for 24 hours in water, then warm stratified for 90 days, followed by a cold stratification for 90 days.

Hardy to -20F (-28.8C)
