      Wintergreen (Creeping Wintergreen,
Checkerberry) Evergreen groundcover with light pink blooms maturing to red berries. The fruits are edible and are considered best after frost. They are used to make pies and jams. The young leaves are used to make tea and an oil "oil of wintergreen", distilled from them, is used to treat aches and pains (methyl salicylate, found in the leaves is related to aspirin). The plant itself makes an especially nice ground cover for shady spots, as it prefers a moist woodland-like humus. Partial or full shade; hardy to -20F (-28.8C); height: 6in. #A4147 Packet $8.00, Approximately 100 seeds |
