Freemontodendron californicum
Flannel Bush, California Freemontia

Evergreen shrub, native to California with soft slighty furry oval or tri-lobed leaves and bright yellow blooms.  It reaches 5ft in height rather quickly and can grow to 10ft under optimum conditions and spread as wide.  Freemontodendrons can be pruned to either a shrub or tree shape and make very attractive additions to xeriscaped gardens, where water is in short supply.  The bark has been stripped and used to make fish nets.

The shrub thrives in chalky, sandy soils and is not happy with wet heavy soils.  It is unwise to water Freemontodendrons when the soil is hot and dry, it is best to wait until the soil cools in the evening or early morning.

Late spring and early summer brings a burst of color from these lovely plants with 3 inch blooms that resemble rhododendrons.

Freemontodendrons can be propagated either by sowing seed or by cuttings.  From seed:  soak seed in hot tap water for 24hr, then cold stratify for 90 days prior to sowing OR (if you plant in areas that do not fall below 20F (3.9C) you can naturally stratify by planting seed outdoors in late fall.  Seedlings should be transplanted when they reach about 6in tall.   From cuttings: Take 6 inch cuttings from half ripe wood in early spring and root in sand/peat mixture.  Allow soil to dry between waterings.  Transplant when seedlings are rooted.

Hardy to 20F (-3.9C);  height: 10ft.
