Dragon Tree (Dragon's Blood Tree)
Palm-like evergreen that begins its career looking like an agave with long dagger like leaves emerging from a central crown. Later in life (at about 10-20 years of age), the plant will bloom, after which it begins to branch, forming a thick central trunk. Very slow growing, it requires very little water and full sun or partial shade. Excellent as a houseplant, it is a native of the Canary Islands, Madeira Island and Cape Verde Islands and is the legendary tree sprung from the dragon's blood in the Eleventh labor of Hercules. Indeed, the tree's sap is called Dragon's Blood (being a deep red in color) and has been used as a cure for diarrhea, dysentery and syphilis, is used as an antiseptic and in mystical rituals. Hardy to 30F (-1.1C); height: 20ft.
