Diospyros kaki

Japanese Persimmon (Juan Tsao, Kasemek)

Date Plum (Diospyros lotus)
Native to China, Japan, and the Himalayas, this species bears cherry-sized fruits that, like its cousins, are very astringent when unripe, but are harvested after several frosts and allowed to ripen off the tree.  When dried, the fruits have the taste of dates. Male and female trees are necessary to produce fruit.  The seeds have been used for centuries in China as a sedative.  This species is used frequently as a rootstock for cultivars of the less hardy D. kaki.

Texas Persimmon (Chapote, Mexican Persimmon, Black Persimmon)
Native Texas multi-trunked tree with small ovate leaves and bark which peels in strips, revealing a very attractive grey bark.  Small greeenish-white blooms produce small cherry-sized black fruits, which are ususally processed into jellies, jams and pie filling.  An excellent species for use in xeroscaping, it is tough, adaptable and needs very little water to thrive.  The plant prefers a well-drained soil and does very well in rocky terrain with shallow soils and can, under optimum conditions, form large thickets.  Good wildlife plant.  Both male and female trees are necessary to produce fruit.  Hardy to 10F (-17.7C);  height: 20ft.
#A3937    Packet   $17.00  Approximately 10 seeds

diospyros virginiana american persimmon tree seed
#A938
Diospyros virginiana
American Persimmon
A handsome tree with large dark green leaves and yellow-green flowers in the spring, followed by small round yellow-orange fruits with a pink blush.  The fruits ripen in late autumn or early winter, are a rich source of vitamin C, and are very astringent when green, but rich and sweet when ripe.  Protect fruit from a heavy frost before ripening - it can ruin them.  After they are ripe, frost will not hurt them.  The tree bark is also astringent and is used to treat inflammation.  The wood is very hard and heavy and is used to manufacture furniture and golf club handles.  The trees prefer a well drained soil, but are tolerant.  They do not, however, like to be moved once planted.  Both male and female trees are needed to produce fruit.  Hardy to -30F (-34.4C); height: 30ft.
