Belonging to the Pea Family, Leguminosae, Colutea arborescens is a hardy deciduous shrub with pinnate leaves, pea shaped yellow blooms and large 3 inch seed pods resembling bladders (thus the name Bladder Senna) that are quite ornamental when dried. Native to southern Europe, it is often used in erosion control as it has an extensive root system, and as a landscaping shrub. Mature specimens reach 10-12ft in height and have loose growth habits.

The plant is very adaptable and not particular about soil types as long as it is not water logged. Fast growing, they will soon form a hedge when planted close together and are suitable for dry sunny banks. Colutea flowers in summer and the blooms are produced on new growth, thus pruning shoul dbe done in late fall or early winter months.

Propagation is easily accomplished by sowing seeds or by taking green wood cuttings, rooted in summer. The seeds are extremely hard and should be scarified before planting. See intructions for seed scarification

Medicinally, Colutea arborescens leaves have been used as a laxative. Seeds are poisonous. Hardy to -10F (-23.3C); height: 12ft.
