Pepperbush, White Alder) Deciduous shrub bearing racemes of fragrant white blooms in the summer. The stems can be used to produce a mild soap substitute. The plants prefer a well-drained sandy loam, but are very tolerant and will grow in most garden soils (they don't like highly alkaline soils, however). Japanese Clethra Native Japanese variety with racemes of very fragrant white blooms (4-6 inches long) appearing in summer, followed by small berries. Leaves are oval in shape and turn a deep bronze or red in autumn. The bark is reddish-brown in color, fragrant,and peels in strips. The plant prefers a moist, well-drained soil, slightly acidic. Stems can be pulverized and used to obtain a mild soap. Makes a nice specimen or accent plant or can be trimmed into a hedge.
