#A12400  Carissa macrocarpa
Carissa macrocarpa (Syn. Carissa grandiflora)
Num-Num,  Natal plum, Noem,noem, Amatungula

Tropical evergreen shrub native to South Africa, member of the family Apocynaceae.  Carissas grow in any ordinary soil and are useful as plantings in maritime areas, as they withstand salt winds very well.  They make good hedges and bear edible fruits.  Suitable for only USDA Zones 10 and higher, they can make interesting additions to the greenhouse, but will require a great deal of space.

Leaves are shiny, deep green and fragrant white blooms that mature into scarlet fruits that are eaten off the bush, canned or made into jellies and jams.  The stems are very spiny and contain a milky, latex-like sap.

Carissa is easily propagated by sowing seed or cuttings.  For transplants from seed, sow seed in pots or trays.  Keep moist at 80F.  Seedlings are quick to germinate, but slow growing at first.  Transplant to larger containers when seedlings reach 2 inches tall.  Transplant outdoors when seedlings are well established.  Plants will fruit in about 3-4 years from seed.  For cuttings, located a small branch, 1/4 inch in diameter.  Make a cut halfway through the branch, then bend it downward, leaving it attached to the shrub.  The stem will callus over in about 2 months.  At this time, cut through the branch, remove it from the parent, then place the cutting in damp sand.  Transplant the seedling when it forms roots.
