      Sweet Shrub (Carolina Allspice, Allspice,
Spice Bush) Native to the southeastern US, this deciduous shrub has rounded leaves and maroon to brown blooms that appear at the end of the new growth stems. Crushed flowers have a strong scent of strawberry-banana, which makes it a favorite of browsing wildlife. The plant is adaptable to many types of soils, as long as it is well drained, and prefers shade or partially shaded areas. The bark can be dried and used as a substitute for cinnamon, and a tea brewed from the root has been used as a diretic and as an eye drop. The leaves have been used as a moth repellent and as a disinfectant. Hardy to -20F (-28.8C); height: 4ft. #A2840 Packet $5.00, Approximately 50 seeds |
