Mexican Bird of Paradise (Pride of Barbados) Caesalpinia pulcherra or Poinciana pulcherrima Small perennial evergreen shrub with bowl-shaped red blooms growing at the end of prickly branches. Native to the West Indies, it's leaves have been used as a purgative and as a treatment for kidney stones, malaria and bronchitis. It is a lovely specimen and is often used to attract and to feed butterflies. It prefers a slightly alkaline well-drained soil in full sun and can be grown in cooler climates as an annual plant.
